Mutual funds

For millions of Americans, mutual funds represent a simple and convenient way to invest. A mutual fund may hold securities, such as stocks or bonds, from dozens or even hundreds of issuers, and each seeks to achieve a certain objective, such as long-term growth of capital, income or a combination of the two.

Buying shares of a mutual fund in effect gives you part ownership of all the securities the mutual fund owns. A professional portfolio manager invests the fund's assets according to the goal of the fund.

The primary advantages of owning mutual funds are professional management and automatic diversification. These features appeal to investors who don't have the time or experience to manage their own portfolios, or the ability to buy the broad array of investments every mutual fund owns.
