Stocks & bonds

Stocks and bonds are the most common and widely-known investment vehicles. You can work with an Ameriprise financial advisor to purchase stocks and bonds or invest online on our secure and private site.

Stocks

You can trade stocks listed on all the major U.S. exchanges (NYSE, AMEX, NASDAQ), and unlisted over the counter (OTC) securities.

How you trade is up to you:

  • Online through your brokerage account
  • Automated phone system
  • Licensed service representative through our client service center
Bonds

Bonds, also known as fixed-income securities, generate a fixed amount of income each year, determined when the bond is issued.

  • Bonds are usually issued in increments of $1,000.
  • Ameriprise Financial has a dedicated bond desk to help you find fixed-income products that meet your needs.

The Ameriprise ONE® Financial Account allows you to trade the following fixed-income products by phone:

  • Corporate bonds
  • Municipal bonds
  • U.S. Treasury bills, notes, bonds and zeros
  • Agency securities
  • Collateralized mortgage obligation
  • Government National Mortgage Association (Ginnie Mae)
  • Government Securities Income Fund (GSIF)

Investment products, including shares of mutual funds, are not federally or FDIC-insured, are not deposits or obligations of, or guaranteed by, any financial institution, and involve investment risks including possible loss of principal and fluctuation in value.

There are risks associated with fixed income investments, including credit risk, interest rate risk, and prepayment and extension risk. In general, bond prices rise when interest rates fall and vice versa. This effect is usually more pronounced for longer-term securities. Non-investment grade securities, commonly called "high-yield" or "junk" bonds, generally have more volatile prices and carry more risk to principal and income than investment grade securities.Investment decisions should always be made based on an investor's specific financial needs, objectives, goals, time horizon and risk tolerance.

Brokerage, investment and financial advisory services are made available through Ameriprise Financial Services, Inc. Member FINRA and SIPC. Some products and services may not be available in all jurisdictions or to all clients.
